5 Miracles You May Have Missed

There I was, enjoying General Conference, right in the middle of Elder Gary E. Stevenson’s “How Does the Holy Ghost Help You?”, when one of our newest apostles dropped a bombshell of a story. I hadn’t heard the story of the Japan Sendai Mission President Reid Tateoka and his inspired decision to invite all missionaries to an upcoming regional leadership conference. By listening to the Spirit, President Tateoka prevented a catastrophic event from harming the missionaries under his stewardship.

Crazy story, Elder Stevenson. After hearing about such an impressive experience, I got wondering—what are some other outstanding modern miracles? Here are five modern miracles you may have missed.

1. President Nelson and his wife survive armed robbers:

Then-Elder Russell M. Nelson and his wife were visiting Mozambique Maputo Mission President Blair Packard at the mission home. The group had just finished taco salad when armed men stormed the room. “The four armed robbers had one intention,” Sister Nelson said, “to (harm) my husband and take me hostage.”

But it didn’t happen. Miraculously, the only major injury inflicted by the robbers was Sister Blair’s broken arm. I heard Elder Nelson speak on the subject and he affirmed that “angels watch over [us],” whether we perceive them or not.

2. The Bombing of Temple Square:

It was April 18, 1910, a little past 3 am. Hundreds of downtown residents were crowding the square, waiting for a view of the expected Halley’s Comet. Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked Temple Square. Many stargazers assumed that the comet had hit the earth.

The truth was a terrestrial, albeit more malicious threat. A dynamite and nitroglycerin device had been placed near the doors of the Salt Lake Temple. The city block was shaken by the explosive, knocking watchmen to the ground, twisting the framework of the Hotel Utah and shattering windows up and down the street. According to one eyewitness, there was “not enough glass left to make a pair of spectacles.” The Angel Moroni statue atop the temple was slightly singed and its horn had been knocked askew.

Despite the damage, however, there was no lasting harm to watchmen, stargazers, or Angel Moroni. Considering that the bombers responsible later killed 21 people in a similar attack in Los Angeles, it seems miraculous there were no casualties on Temple Square.
