Joseph Smith’s seer stones
Yes, Mormons believe that the prophet Joseph Smith used seer stones to translate The Book of Mormon from an ancient record inscribed on golden plates. At face value, that’s difficult to believe, and we Mormons often get some flack for it.
Some critics raise an eyebrow at that claim, yet fully believe that God has a strong history of using inanimate objects to bring about his purposes. Exhibit A:
- The staff of Moses
- Procured water from a rock
- Turned into a snake
- Parted the Red Sea
And yet we all say, as we should, that the staff had no power in and of itself, but that the power came from God. The staff was simply a conduit. The same principle applies to Joseph Smith’s seer stones.
