Six Sweet Things to Do with Sugar (Besides Eating it.)
1. Feed the hummingbirds.
The recipe is easy — bring 4 Cups of water to the boil, remove from heat, and stir in 1 Cup table sugar until dissolved. Cool to room temperature. Pour into a hummingbird feeder.
2. Help the bees.
You can give bees an energy boost by placing a small cup of sugar water in your garden near the plants they normally visit. Mix 1:2 water and sugar until dissolved. Use an egg cup and only put out 2 – 3 Tablespoons of sugar water at a time. You don’t want birds trying to bathe in it.
3. Cure your boo-boos.
Sprinkling sugar on open sores kills the bacteria that keep them from healing.
4. Cure a tongue burn.
Soup hotter than you thought? Try sucking on a sugar cube.
5. Make your own sugar scrub.
Sugar won’t dissolve in oil. Mix coarse sugar with scented oil to use to exfoliate your skin before showering.
6. Make your cut flowers last longer.
“Add three teaspoons of sugar and two tablespoons of white vinegar per quart of warm water for fresh-cut flowers. The sugar feeds the stems and the vinegar restricts the growth of bacteria.” (Read more about sugar uses.)
