John Dehlin Fears Possible Excommunication

Just days after Kate Kelly is excommunicated from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popular podcast host John Dehlin says he is nervous he may also be facing similar consequences. NBC News reported that Dehlin is under scrutiny for his online podcast and website. Dehlin said,

“I think the church is bothered by my podcast. In that podcast, we explore difficult issues like homosexuality, feminism, racism and difficult historical problems with the church.”

Dehlin told NBC News that after a third investigation into his conduct in January he e-mailed his bishop with the request to no longer be considered a member of the ward or be contacted by church officials but he would still attend church services on Sunday.

According to Latter-day Saint sociologist Armand Mauss, “Mormon leaders are attempting to draw a line between public commentary and even criticism on the part of church members, on the one hand… and organizing a pressure group, on the other hand.”

In wake of  Kate Kelly’s recent excommunication, Dehlin said,

“I’m really sad for Kate and I am a little bit worried that I’ll have the same fate…But I’m trying to go into the meeting optimistic and hopeful.”

According to LDS.org, “Church discipline is an inspired process that takes place over a period of time. Through this process and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, a member can receive forgiveness of sins, regain peace of mind, and gain strength to avoid transgression.”

NBC News says Dehlin is scheduled to appear at his disciplinary council this Sunday, June, 29th. If Dehlin is excommunicated, his membership would be nullified. He still could attend services, but would have to be re-baptized to once again gain membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
