Myths that Liberal Mormons and Conservative Mormons Believe

According to squaretwo.org, there are seven social science myths that many liberal Latter-day Saints tend to believe, and seven social science myths that many conservative Latter-day Saints believe.

Stephen Cranney, the author of the article, debunks the following seven myths that he says Mormon Liberals like to believe:

  1. Utah Mormons are porn-using hypocrites
  2. Mormon women are leaving the Church at higher rates than men due to gender issues in the Church
  3. “The Church is going through the greatest period of apostasy since Kirtland”
  4. Psychological research has shown that masturbation is healthy for your sexuality
  5. A large portion of the homeless in Utah are gay Mormons who have been expelled from their families (optional addition: the gay Mormon suicide rate is incredibly high)
  6. The Church needs to get with the times or risk dying off
  7. Mormons are disproportionately depressed

In his discussion of each of these myths, Cranney provides links to his research that back up his reasoning. Some of his responses might surprise you. For instance, Latter-day Saint men are leaving the Church at a higher rate than Latter-day Saint women.

The article also discusses the seven following myths that Mormon Conservatives like to believe:

  1. The divorce rate is increasing
  2. No-fault divorce laws are bad
  3. The world is becoming much more wicked
  4. The End is near
  5. All humans are descended from a couple that lived within written history
  6. The United States of America is awesome
  7. Europe is dying off due to low fertility

Cranney also goes through his reasoning for debunking these myths for conservatives providing links to back up his statements. Read Cranney’s article and see his explanations at SquareTwo.org.
