Five Things to Help Put a Little Pep in Your Step
If you’re happy and you know it, obviously you clap your hands. But at times, for everyone, life is far from happy and void of any applause. Let me suggest five things to help put a little pep in your step merry measure to your mood:
-
Celebrate the little things. Sometimes we don’t give ourselves permission to have fun until we can check off large accomplishments- like the end of the semester, marriage, getting the job, etc. But putting the fun into dysfunctional and daily life makes it bearable. Find your own little reasons to celebrate- you made it to your early morning lab on time, you didn’t burn the dinner, you went for a walk…
-
Look at the glass half full. Every situation can be spun to be seen in a positive light.
-
Play hard and pray hard. Start and end every day with prayer. If you are like me, and occasionally forget morning prayers before you head out the door, put a sticky note on the dashboard of your car or try setting an alarm in your phone for a few minutes before you plan to leave.
-
Be great not good. The most common small talk question is, “how are you?” Take good out of of your vocabulary. Replace it with great, fabulous, fantastic, or awesome. You will be surprised how this simple change in your day to day vernacular can have a huge impact on your happiness.
-
Smile. Sounds too simple, but it works. Our brains are hardwired to believe what we tell it. In the words of Nat King Cole, “Smile tho’ your heart is aching. Smile even tho’ its breaking.. You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you’ll just smile.”
I think Elder Holland say it best, “Keep loving. Keep trying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. Keep growing. Heaven is cheering you on today, tomorrow, and forever.” And that is a reason alone to be happy.
