7 Mormons Die in Sierra Leone Landslide
Sierra Leone’s capital city, Freetown, is rain-soaked, and about 5 acres of a hill gave way and launched a mud-slide down onto a village nearby, killing around 330 people. Seven members of the LDS Church were among them.
No Mormon missionaries were injured, and no church properties were impacted. Almost 600 people are still missing, and it’s unknown whether there are any Latter-day Saints among them.
Rainfall is ongoing, and more landslides are possible. The Church is rushing to send relief.
The first Mormon missionaries arrived in Sierra Leone in 1988. Today, there are more than 17,000 members in 55 congregations, according to Mormon Newsroom.
The country is part of the Africa West Area.
