Let’s Talk About THAT Scene in Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker

Since you’re probably stuck in your house right now I just want to let you know that Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker was released on DVD and Bluray TODAY. It was previously released for purchase on Amazon, but it looks like it won’t be available for Disney+ streaming until the summer. If you haven’t already seen the movie then consider this your SPOILER ALERT.

While this movie contained many new elements to the Force, insights into the character’s family relations, and a couple of huge plot twists, there is one part that stood out to me over the others.

The final battle scene of this film is pretty epic and I think it deserves a bit more recognition. But first, let me explain the context that makes this scene is so powerful.

Together We Rise

Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo.

Throughout the final movie of this newest Star Wars trilogy, there is an overarching theme that power is harnessed through unity. When Poe Dameron asks Lando how they defeated the dark side in the past, Lando says, “We had each other. That’s how we won.”

When Rey is trying to take on Kylo Ren, telling her friends she needs to go alone, Finn says, “Yeah, alone with friends…We go together.”

Poe’s friend Zorri Bliss has a line that hits home for me when she says, “They win by making you think you’re alone.”

The Final Battle

Toward the end of the movie, the Resistance faces their final battle of the trilogy with the First Order. The pep talk given to the Resistance fighters by Poe is as follows:

“We’ve got friends out there. They’ll come if they know there’s hope.” The group wasn’t convinced but he continued, “They will. First Order wins by making us think we’re alone. We’re not alone. Good people will fight if we lead them.”

Later on, the Resistance is losing big time. Fighters are dying left and right. The dwindling army thinks that they are all going to be destroyed. Poe says, “My friends, I’m sorry, I thought we had a shot. There’s just too many of them.”

And then out of nowhere, BAM. An entire fleet of rebel forces enters the scene at light speed. In my personal opinion, it might be one of the most awesome scenes in cinematic history. Lando responds with, “But there are more of us, Poe. There are more of us.”

They continue to fight and realize the strength and power that they truly have. These underdogs were putting up a good fight and the First Order becomes aware of their imminent defeat. General Pryde says, “Where did they get all these fighter crafts? They have no navy.” A First Order officer responds, “It’s not a navy, sir. It’s just people.”

The Gospel Connection

What would an article about Star Wars be without a gospel connection? Okay, so imagine that the First Order is equivalent to Satan and his followers. Then remind yourself that you are part of the Resistance.

Satan will do everything in his power to make you feel like you are alone. Just like in this movie, he wins by making you think that you’re alone. There will be times in our lives where we feel overwhelmed and outnumbered.

When we are feeling like we have failed miserably, Satan will cause us to think that we should just give up because things are too hard. He will break us apart from each other and attempt to dismantle our unity.

Then out of nowhere, BAM. Here come your ministering brothers and sisters, your friends, your family, your ward leaders, your neighbors, and most of all, your Savior and Father in Heaven. Your fleet. They will come in at light speed to help you remember that they have your back.

As Elisha stated in 2 Kings 6:16, “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.” Or, in the words of Lando, “There are more of us.”

One Last SPOILER

Jesus walking with Peter.
Jesus walking with Peter.

That First Order officer was right, the rebel forces were just people. They came from all different walks of life and they let go of their pride and differences to come together to defeat a common enemy.

Just an FYI, we are doing the exact same thing. Only we don’t have to be nervous about how our movie will end because SPOILER ALERT: The Savior wins.
