Climbing Our Metaphorical Everest
On this day, in the year 1983, Larry Nielson was the first American to complete a task that less than ninety people have achieved. That mission was to climb Mount Everest without using any supplemental oxygen. A neat fact about Nielson is that he is also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From his monumental experience of climbing the tallest mountain on the Earth, he penned this quote: “You don’t conquer it, you survive it.”
Like climbing Mount Everest, our lives are full of trials that we must overcome. You and I are going to come up against some hardships. A key part of going through life is one’s attitude towards any problem.
Like going without supplemental oxygen, there are certain things we cannot go without when facing a difficult situation. Here are a list of resources we can go to for help when needed.
1. Christ
Reliance on the Lord when we are going through these tribulations, the road will seem less bumpy and we spiritually grow. I am positive the Lord is our greatest cheerleader and that He will reach out His arm to aid in any way we need Him to. Christ atoned for our sins and knows every pain we will suffer in this life. Reaching out to Him is all He asks for us to do.
2. Family
Family members can be the greatest source of support. Whether it be a parent, a grand parent, a spouse, a sibling or any relation, receiving comfort and counsel from them is never a bad idea. What they have to say is can be filled with wisdom. Granted, there are times when some family members may not fulfill the role to console and mentor very well, I’m sure they will give you their love undeniably.
3. The Scriptures and Teachings from Church Leaders
The Scriptures are a great resource for knowledge, guidance, and comfort for us. I usually look in the topical guide for words or terms that relate to trials. Usually topics that come up are faith, patience, and long-suffering. Many church leaders have addressed in General Conference and in articles posted in the Ensign. An easy way to do a search on what church leaders have said is to go on churchofjesuschrist.org and use the search bar on the top of the page to find some great talks and articles.
4. Friends
Friends, if they are like family, can be a great source of encouragement. There was a time when I was feeling pretty down about my circumstances. My husband was worried about me and called all my friends over to our place to give me moral support. I am grateful for my friends who can do things like that for me.
5. Ward Family
Going to the bishop in the ward or even seeing the Relief Society president is great option for seeking help, advice, or comfort. It may require you to break out of your shell to admit that help is required, but more than likely, the bishop or Relief Society will be more than happy to help. This is also why Home and Visiting Teachers are so important to the ward dynamic for they can assess from those they teach what they are in need of.
Each day presents itself with new challenges. We must not be discouraged, for there are resources at our disposal. We are meant to enjoy life, and even though it may seem difficult, if we remember to keep in mind this list of people and utilize our scriptures it will alleviate a lot of the pressure of going through a trial alone.
