Eliminate Awkward Silence With These Conversation Topics for Youth Dances
As a young woman, I remember being a bit unimpressed with some of the conversation topics at youth dances. A particularly popular question I was constantly asked was, “What’s the color of your toothbrush?”

I know, I know, what an absolutely stimulating topic of conversation. After I responded quickly with, “blue,” the conversation would settle into a nice awkward silence.

Most dances are short, they last only about two to four minutes. So you gotta be quick if you want to make a lasting, good impression. Here are some conversation ideas to ensure those awkward silences never make an appearance again!

This is a fairly general category that you can take in any direction. You can ask about hobbies, sports, food, books, etc. Here are a few examples:
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What kind of movies do you like to watch?
- What is your least favorite genre of music?
- What is the dessert that you like the most?
- What is the dessert that you like the least?
Family

I don’t know about you, but I love talking about my family. We are crazy, but that’s what makes talking about them so fun!
- How many people are in your family?
- Where do you fall? (Are you the oldest, youngest, middle?)
- What does your family do for fun?
- Do you have any unique family traditions?
Opposites

This can be used with any person/place/thing under the sun. Just start with, “Do you prefer…”
- Hot/cold?
- Beach/mountains?
- Dogs/cats?
- Cake/pie?
- Beach/mountains?
- Traveling/staying at home?

Do you want to ask questions that will allow you to really get to know a person? Try these.
- If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
- What does the fox say? (Just kidding, don’t actually ask that question.)
- If you could have any superpower, what would you pick?
- What would your spirit animal be and why?
- What’s the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?
- If you could meet with any person from the past or present, who would you pick and why?
Would You Rather

Some of these questions are so hard to decide between! If you want to stump your dance partner, ask one of these questions. Would you rather…
- Be alone for the rest of your life, or constantly surrounded by people?
- Eat no candy for Halloween or no turkey during Thanksgiving?
- Be able to communicate with animals or read people’s minds?
- Never be able to shout or never be able to whisper?
- Never go outside again or never go inside again?
Now that you have questions to ask, remember to remember these details. Don’t just ask and then promptly forget what their answer is. People feel really good when you remember small details they have told you about their lives. Good luck and have fun!
