Member of the Seventy Speaks at ‘Black, White and Mormon’ Conference, Addresses Race

On October 9, the University of Utah hosted the conference, “Black, White and Mormon,” at which Elder Joseph W. Sitati, a member of the Seventy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke.

Sitati, from Kenya, addressed the topic of race and the international Church, focusing his remarks on self-reliance, race and the Church’s growth in Africa. Mormon Newsroom reports that Sitati reiterated that all races are equal. Referencing a gospel topics page, Sitati said,

[pull_quote_center]The doctrine of the Church confirms that people of all backgrounds, living or who have ever lived on the earth, are children of God and are equal before Him. None will be denied their blessings.[/pull_quote_center]

Sitati informed those in attendance that more than 450,000 Latter-day Saints live in Africa today and that the continent has one of the highest new member retention rates. He stressed that the Church is well aware of the saints in Africa and that the Church is “proactive in responding to both spiritual and temporal needs of the Saints in Africa.”
