Steve Young Turned Down Role in ‘R’ Rated Film for Religious Reasons

Steve Young was a top choice for a cameo appearance in a late 1990’s film—a role that Young turned down for religious reasons. The former San Francisco 49er’s star-quarterback is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and felt that accepting the role would not allow him to be a good example.

The Farrelly brothers, who wrote and directed the movie “There’s Something About Mary,” appeared on the Rich Eisen Show earlier this week and said that Young was their second choice for the cameo. After Drew Bledsoe (the then starting quarterback for the Patriots) turned down the role, they decided to see if Young would be interested. Larry Brown Sports reports that Young declined the brothers’ offer, saying:

[pull_quote_center]I cannot do it, because if I do it, it’s R-rated, and I know all the Mormon kids will be sneaking in and I wouldn’t feel good about that.[/pull_quote_center]

While on the Rich Eisen Show this past week, the brothers commented on Young’s refusal, referring to him as a “stand-up guy.”
