Notes:

— I apologize in advance if I pronounce any names or places in this video wrong.

— In Mark 5 we read that Jesus and his disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee into the land of the Gadarenes (or Gerasenes in some translations). Gadara and Gerasa were cities in the Decapolis region. It’s in this region that Jesus sends the devils into the herd of swine. Some believe that this miracle may have even occurred near a small coastal village by the name of Gergasa. In any case — it was in the Decapolis region.

— The story of Herod the Great executing all male children under two years old in Bethlehem (and possibly vicinity) is not confirmed outside the Bible (yet).

— Researchers have yet to discover evidence corroborating the Bible account of the “Massacre of the Innocents” story (Herod ordering the execution of all male children under two years old in Bethlehem). Some people believe it never happened. Others believe evidence simply has yet to be discovered. Many Christians will point out that the city of Bethlehem would not have had very many residents back when Christ was a baby. Thus, the number of male children under two years old would have been relatively few, and thus may not have been a large enough event to leave much of an imprint on the historic record.

— There is some controversy surrounding the issue of the “census” which brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. When Archaleus (who ruled after Herod the Great died) was deposed and his land became an official Roman province, a census was taken (about 6 AD). Many believe this is the census that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem (the argument runs deeper than this, but you get the gist). However, in scripture, Herod the Great was still in power during the census (remember, he has to still be around to order the “Massacre of the Innocents”). Thus, many Christians believe there must have been an earlier census than the 6 AD event. Latter-day Saints may go this route, or (as nonbelievers in biblical inerrancy) they may even conclude that Luke (the gospel of Luke) got the chronology of the story a bit wrong.

— The Caesarea amphitheater (built by Herod in the port city Caesarea) is still used today for concerts.

— Herod the Great was part Idumean, but adhered to the Jewish religion. His mother was a Nabatean princess (Arabic). Herod’s mixed heritage was just another reason why the Jews didn’t like him. Also, Idumeans were said to be descendants of the prophet Jacob’s son, Esau. In the Old Testament book, Obadiah, it is prophesied that the descendants of Esau would be wiped out (which they largely were, by the Romans, circa AD 70).
