You Are Amazing Just the Way You Are!

We are bombarded with social media at every turn, whether we have a Twitter account or not. We see our friends off in distant lands, or Instagram influencers wearing outfits fit for the runway. Sometimes we can resolve to be happy for others and their accomplishments, and other times our pride gets the best of us and we are left feeling common and unimportant. It may be tempting to try to copy these people, to find the happiness that we seek through them, but let me tell you why that approach is never going to be successful for anyone!

First, I had to ask myself some simple questions. Why are we all important? Why does God love us all? After studying these questions out in my mind and discussing ideas with friends and family members, I came to the conclusion that all of us play a critical role in God’s plan; one that only we could fill, in fact. How do I know this? Well, God’s plan is perfect, which means that if even one of us were missing, it wouldn’t be the same, perfect plan. So how is that for being important!?

This understanding has helped me immensely whenever I catch myself feeling down about myself and my abilities. Growing up, I was always trying to find a talent that would set me apart from others; something that would make me special! I spent most of my school days doodling away in my notebooks and not taking as many notes as my teachers would have liked. I loved to draw and hand letter, but I thought that was just about every girl! So I took no thought to this skill being an actual talent. After I became a mother and finished college, I wanted a fun hobby to spend my spare hours perfecting, and so calligraphy and art became my passion! I remember posting a few pictures to my Instagram account of notes I had written to my husband and getting such kind remarks and compliments from my friends. I realized that I had a talent after all! This experience lead me to open up my small business, something I never would have done if I hadn’t realized how special and valuable my talent really was.

At the end of the day, there will always be people who want you to be someone you’re not, and you may even want this for yourself, too. But there is great genius in the statement by Bruno Mars, “you’re amazing just the way you are!” You don’t need to change a thing about yourself to be unique or special. You are special the way you are, and the sooner you embrace that truth, the sooner you will find joy in your day-to-day existence!
